Overwintering Pests in Dallas: Stink Bugs, Boxelder Bugs, and Lady Beetles

Every fall, homeowners notice the same thing. Dozens of insects gather on a sunny outside wall, and then a few turn up on the ceiling indoors. Those are overwintering pests in Dallas. They are not a sign that your house is dirty. They just want somewhere warm and dry to sit out the cold.

What These Insects Are Actually Doing

Most insects die off or go dormant outdoors in winter. A few species survive a different way. They shelter as adults. So as nights cool through October, they hunt for a protected gap.

Here is the part that surprises people. They do not breed indoors. They do not eat your food, chew wood, or sting. The ones crawling on a window in January came in back in October.

The Three You Will Actually See

Stink bugs

Shield-shaped, brown or green, and slow moving. As the name promises, they release a strong odor when crushed. So squashing one on a curtain leaves a stain as well as a smell.

Boxelder bugs

Black with narrow red or orange lines, about half an inch long. They feed on boxelder, maple, and ash seeds all summer, so homes with those trees nearby see the most. They also travel in groups, which is why they seem to arrive all at once.

Lady beetles

Not the garden ladybug most people picture. The ones that pile into houses are Asian lady beetles, usually orange with a variable number of spots. Handled roughly, they leave a yellow smear on walls and fabric.

Why Overwintering Pests in Dallas Pick the Sunny Side

These insects follow warmth. On a cool October afternoon, south-facing and west-facing walls hold heat long after the rest of the house cools down. So that is where they land first, often in the hundreds. It also explains why one wall can be covered while another has almost none.

Then they look for a way in, through whatever small gap that wall offers.

Why Spraying Them Indoors Backfires

An aerosol can only kills what it hits. The larger group is already tucked inside your wall voids, out of reach. Worse, insects that die in a wall become food for carpet beetles. Those beetles then move on to wool and stored clothing. So an indoor spray can trade a harmless nuisance for a pest that does real damage. Vacuum them instead, then empty the canister outside.

What Actually Keeps Them Out

  • Caulk seams around window and door frames, and replace worn weatherstripping.
  • Seal where pipes, cables, and dryer vents pass through exterior walls.
  • Screen attic, soffit, and gable vents.
  • Repair torn screens and fit door sweeps.
  • Cut vegetation back off the sunny walls.
  • Treat the exterior before the first cool snap, not after they are inside.

Timing matters here. Our seasonal homeowner checklist covers the rest of the fall jobs.

When to Call a Professional

Call if the clusters return every autumn, or if the vents are out of safe reach. Fall is also when crickets push indoors, and the same gaps let both in.
