Finding wings on a windowsill or a little pile of sawdust under a baseboard is enough to worry any homeowner. The question we hear most is carpenter ants vs termites: which one is it, and how bad is it? Both live in North Texas, both can damage wood, and the signs look alike at first. Here is how to tell them apart.
The Biggest Difference: Eating Wood vs Digging Through It
Termites eat wood. They live off the cellulose inside it and can hollow out framing from the inside while the surface still looks fine.
Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They chew tunnels through it to build nests, and they prefer wood that is already damp or soft from a leak. So carpenter ants often point to a moisture problem as well as an ant problem.
Sawdust vs Mud: What They Leave Behind
- Carpenter ants: push out piles of coarse, sawdust-like shavings called frass, often mixed with bits of dead insects. The tunnels inside the wood are smooth and clean.
- Termites: do not leave sawdust piles. Subterranean termites, the most common kind in Dallas, build pencil-wide mud tubes up foundations and pack their tunnels with soil.
Telling the Winged Ones Apart
With carpenter ants vs termites, both insects send out winged swarmers, so a few wings near a window do not settle the question. Look closely at the body if you can:
- Waist: ants have a thin, pinched waist. Termites have a thick, straight body.
- Antennae: ant antennae bend like an elbow. Termite antennae are straight.
- Wings: termite wings are all the same length and drop off easily. Ant front wings are longer than the back ones.

Which One Is Worse?
Termites usually do more damage because they eat the wood itself and can work unseen for a long time. Carpenter ants still matter, though. Left alone, they keep widening their nest, and the damp wood they choose often has a leak behind it that needs fixing.
If you only see small ants trailing to a sink, that is a different problem. Our post on ants in the kitchen with no food out covers it.
Do Not Guess From a Photo
Wood that sounds hollow when tapped, soft or damaged framing, or mud tubes on the slab all call for an inspection, not a can of spray. Spraying the ants you can see rarely reaches the nest, and it does nothing to termites inside the wall.
