If something is biting you at night and you cannot find the culprit, the three usual suspects in North Texas homes are bed bugs, fleas, or mites. The marks look almost identical, but the pests live in completely different places — and that changes what actually gets rid of them.
Bed bug bites: lines and clusters on exposed skin
Bed bugs feed while you sleep, so bites show up on skin left uncovered — arms, shoulders, neck, and face — often in a rough line or tight cluster where the same bug fed more than once.
Bites alone never confirm it. Look for the physical evidence instead:
- Small rust-colored spots along mattress seams, box spring edges, or the headboard
- Shed skins or pepper-like specks in seams, tufts, and folds
- Live bugs roughly the size and shape of an apple seed
Find any of that and you have a bed bug problem. Our bed bug treatment page covers the process, and our back-to-school bed bug check explains how they hitchhike in.
Flea bites: ankles, lower legs, and usually a pet
Fleas bite low. Most people find small, itchy red bumps around the ankles and lower legs, because fleas live in carpet, pet bedding, and shaded spots in the yard — not in your mattress.
Signs it is fleas:
- A dog or cat scratching more than usual, or black specks in the fur that turn rust-red on a damp paper towel
- Bites concentrated below the knee, especially after sitting on carpet
- Tiny dark insects that jump instead of crawling
Fleas are a whole-environment problem. Treating the pet without treating the carpet and the yard just restarts the cycle a few weeks later.
Mites: the category people guess at most
“Mites” covers a lot of ground, and this is where self-diagnosis usually goes wrong.
- Bird and rodent mites move indoors after a nest in an attic or wall void is abandoned. The mites are the symptom; the nest is the problem, and removing it is the fix.
- Dust mites do not bite at all. They trigger allergy symptoms, not bite marks.
- Scabies is a human skin condition, not a pest control issue. If a doctor suspects it, the treatment is medical — spraying the house will not help.
The fastest way to tell bed bugs, fleas, or mites apart
Skip the bite chart and ask where the evidence is. Marks on the upper body plus spotting on the mattress points to bed bugs. Marks around the ankles plus an itchy pet points to fleas. Marks with no bedroom evidence and no pet — especially with recent attic activity — point toward mites from a nest.
When to stop guessing
Reactions vary widely: one person can be covered in marks while another in the same bed shows nothing. That is why a licensed inspection beats self-diagnosis. HK Pest Control Services is licensed and insured in Texas (TPCL #13923) and serves Dallas, Richardson, and Plano, and our FAQ page answers common questions about our treatments.
Bed bugs, fleas, or mites each call for a different treatment plan, and treating the wrong pest costs time and money. Call 469-618-9991 for a free quote and let a licensed technician identify what you are actually dealing with — backed by our guarantee.
