Ants in the Kitchen but No Food Out? What They Really Want

Finding ants in the kitchen when you have not left any food out is confusing. The counters are clean and the crumbs are gone. Still, a line of ants shows up at the sink every morning. In Dallas, the answer is often water, not food.

Why Ants in the Kitchen Often Want Water

Ants need moisture as much as they need food. During hot, dry stretches in North Texas, outdoor water sources shrink. Foragers then follow humidity into your home. Kitchens and bathrooms offer plenty of it.

Odorous house ants are a common example. Small and brown, they give off a musty smell when crushed. Their nests sit in wall voids and soil, and workers travel a long way to reach a damp spot.

Where to Look First

Follow the trail instead of wiping it away. Most trails lead to one of these spots:

  • The sink drain and the cabinet under it
  • The dishwasher base and its supply line
  • The refrigerator drip pan or ice maker line
  • Bathroom sinks, tubs, and shower edges
  • Pet water bowls and plant saucers

A slow drip behind a cabinet can feed a colony for months. Run a dry paper towel along each supply line. A damp towel tells you where to start.

The Food You Cannot See

Some food sources are easy to miss, and ants find them anyway. A thin film of grease on the stove is one. A sticky juice ring on a shelf, sweet residue on the trash can rim, and pet food left out overnight are others. Wipe these with soapy water, not a dry cloth. Soap breaks up the scent trail that ants follow.

Why Spraying the Trail Backfires

A store-bought spray kills the ants you see. It does not reach the colony. Repellent sprays can also split one colony into several smaller ones. We explain how this works in our post on why store-bought bug sprays stop working. Storms can push ants indoors as well, as covered in pests after heavy rain in Dallas.

What You Can Do Today

  • Fix drips and dry the cabinet under the sink.
  • Wipe counters and the stovetop with soapy water.
  • Store pet food and sweets in sealed containers.
  • Take out the trash before it overflows.
  • Seal gaps where pipes enter the wall.

When to Call a Professional

Call if the trail returns within a few days, or if ants come out of a wall or outlet. A returning trail means the colony is still alive. We are licensed and insured in Texas (TPCL #13923), and we treat the colony, not just the ants you can see. Read more about our ant control service in Dallas or browse the FAQ.
