Pests After Heavy Rain in Dallas: What Moves In and Why

Pests after heavy rain are one of the most common reasons Dallas homeowners call us. A big North Texas storm soaks the clay soil, floods drains, and fills every low spot in the yard. Insects and rodents lose their shelter within hours. As a result, many of them head straight for your house.

What moves in after a storm

Ants

Most ant colonies nest in the soil. When water fills the tunnels, workers carry the queen and brood to higher, drier ground. That often means your kitchen, a bathroom, or a wall void. In fact, fire ants can link together into floating rafts and ride the flood out. New mounds often appear across the lawn a few days later as colonies rebuild. Our ant control service targets the colony, not just the trail.

Cockroaches

American cockroaches, the big ones people call water bugs, live in sewers and storm drains. Heavy rain floods those spaces and then pushes them up through floor drains, pipe gaps, and garage thresholds. Several large roaches right after a storm usually came from below, not from your pantry. If they keep showing up, our cockroach exterminator service can find the entry points.

Mosquitoes

Standing water is where mosquitoes breed. Eggs laid in a clogged gutter, plant saucer, or tarp can become biting adults in about a week of warm weather. Some mosquitoes in Dallas County can carry West Nile virus. That is why a wet September keeps them active well into fall.

Rats and mice

Norway rats and mice nest low, often in burrows along foundations, woodpiles, and sheds. Flooding forces them out. Then a dry garage or crawl space becomes the nearest shelter. Our guide to roof rats vs. Norway rats explains how to tell which one you have.

How to keep pests after heavy rain out of your home

  • Empty standing water. Check gutters, saucers, toys, and tarps within a couple of days.
  • Fix drainage. Point downspouts away so water does not pool against the slab.
  • Cover floor drains. A simple drain cover stops roaches from climbing up.
  • Pull mulch back. Keep wet mulch and leaves a few inches off the foundation.
  • Seal small gaps. Caulk around pipes and utility lines, and check door sweeps.

However, spraying an ant trail with a store-bought product can split the colony into several new nests. We explain why in why store-bought bug sprays stop working.

When to call a professional

Call if ants still trail indoors several days after the rain stops. Also call if large roaches keep appearing near drains, or you hear scratching in the walls or garage. Those signs mean the pests have settled in, not just passed through. Our rodent removal service handles rats and mice that moved in to stay. The FAQ page answers the questions we hear most.
