If something is moving in your house after dark, the species matters more than most homeowners expect. The difference between roof rats vs Norway rats decides where the nest is. It also decides where the traps belong and which openings need sealing. North Texas has both. Treating one like the other is why a lot of rat problems come back.
Two rats, two different habits
Roof rats climb
Roof rats are slender, agile, and built for height. They travel fence lines, tree limbs, and dense ivy, then enter near the roof. You will find them in attics, soffits, and garage rafters. Their droppings are small with pointed ends, and their tail is longer than the head and body combined.
Norway rats burrow
Norway rats are heavier, blunt-nosed, and stay low. They dig burrows along foundations, under sheds, and beneath woodpiles. They also work drains and crawl spaces. Their droppings are larger with blunt ends, and their tail is shorter than the head and body.
How to tell roof rats vs Norway rats apart
You rarely see the rat. You see the evidence. Check these four things:
- Where you hear it. Overhead scratching after dark points to roof rats. Noise from a crawl space or under the floor points to Norway rats.
- Droppings. Pointed ends mean roof rats. Blunt, capsule-shaped ends mean Norway rats.
- Entry points. Gnawed soffit corners and chewed vent screens are roof rat work. Burrow holes at the foundation are Norway rat work.
- Grease marks. Both leave dark rub marks. Height tells you which one.
Why this changes where the traps go
Rats run the same routes nightly and stay tight against vertical surfaces. Placement beats quantity. Traps on the garage floor will not catch an attic population, and attic traps do nothing for a foundation burrow. Set them on the animal’s actual runway, perpendicular to the wall.
Local conditions push this both ways. Many homes back onto creek corridors and greenbelts, like much of The Colony. That gives rats cover and water right up to the structure. Mature trees touching a roofline invite climbers. Older slabs with weathered weep holes invite burrowers.
Trapping alone is not the fix
Removing the rats inside does nothing about the opening they used. Until you close the entry points, the next ones follow the same scent trail in. Real rodent removal pairs trapping with exclusion. Lighter, faster noise may mean mice instead. We covered that in why mice move in during fall.
When to call
Call a professional if you hear activity two nights running. Same if you find droppings in more than one room or see gnawed wiring. Rats chew electrical insulation, and that is not a wait-and-see problem.
