Squirrels in the Attic Before Winter: Why Trapping Alone Won’t End It

Squirrels in the attic become a Dallas problem every fall. A warm, dry attic starts to look like a safe place to nest. Plenty of homeowners trap one, hear nothing for a week, then catch the scratching again. That cycle points straight at what a trap cannot fix.

Why squirrels head indoors in September and October

Two things drive it. Fall is a second breeding season for the eastern gray squirrels common in North Texas. Females hunt for a sheltered spot to raise a litter. Cooler nights also push them off open branches toward insulated space.

Your roofline gives them options. Squirrels climb well and chew constantly. A soffit gap, a loose gable vent, a soft fascia board, or a roof-return joint is enough. Not sure what you are hearing? Our guide to telling squirrels, rats, and raccoons apart walks through the differences.

What they do once they are up there

  • Chew wiring, which is a genuine fire risk
  • Shred and flatten insulation, so heating and cooling costs climb
  • Leave urine and droppings that soak into drywall and stain ceilings
  • Carry fleas, ticks, and mites indoors with them
  • Widen the entry hole, which then lets in rain, roaches, and rats

Damage adds up fast, because squirrels stay busy all day.

Why trapping alone won’t end squirrels in the attic

A trap removes the animal. It does nothing about the hole.

Squirrels scent-mark their nest sites, and the marking lingers for weeks. Another squirrel reads it, finds the open entry, and moves in. North Texas neighborhoods hold steady squirrel populations, so a vacancy fills fast.

Timing matters too. Trap an adult female in fall and you may leave a litter sealed behind the drywall. The young do not survive. Now you have an odor problem and a fly problem stacked on the first one.

What actually ends it

  • A full roofline inspection. Every gap gets found, not just the obvious one.
  • A check for young first. Nothing gets sealed until the attic is clear.
  • One-way exclusion. Doors let the animals out and block the way back in.
  • Permanent sealing. Use materials squirrels cannot chew through, not foam.
  • Cleanup. Soiled insulation and nest material come out of the space.

That last step matters more than people expect. Soiled insulation keeps the scent and the parasites in place. Ending squirrels in the attic takes exclusion, not just a trap.

When to call a professional

Call if you hear daytime scratching overhead or watch a squirrel run your roofline. Call if you spot chewed vents or siding, or smell something in a ceiling. Roof work carries real risk, and soiled insulation needs proper handling. Our rodent and wildlife removal service handles the inspection, the removal, and the sealing as one job.
